Struggling to get out tough oil stains on your driveway that you car left behind? If so, take a look at these simple tips that will help you get out even the toughest stains.
Before getting started, you’ll need to take the appropriate safety precautions and wear the proper protective gear and clothing, including coveralls, goggles and impervious gloves. Always read the instructions and warnings for any product you use.
You will need:
- Impervious gloves
- Driveway degreaser
- Engine degreaser (optional; see below)
- Steel brush
Step 1. Removing small stains
It’s entirely possible that small, fresh stains can be removed relatively easily with only hot water, detergent and a steel brush. Pour a small amount of detergent on the stain and scrub with the steel brush. Rinse with the hot water and repeat as necessary.
Step 2. Removing large or old stains
Older stains tend to be more stubborn, which may require use of a driveway degreaser. Degreasers are powerful and fast-acting surfactants that can remove ancient dirt, grease and oil from without doing damage to your driveway.
Step 3. How to apply
Read the instructions on your driveway degreaser carefully before applying to the stain you wish to remove. Always wear the proper protective and safety gear.
Apply the instructed amount of degreaser to the stained area.
Leave for 2-5 minutes, or as stated in the instructions.
Vigorously scrub with a stiff steel brush .
Leave again for 5-10 minutes, or as stated in the instructions.
Wash away with water.
Repeat steps 1-5 as necessary.
Additional hints and tips
If you have a large or heavily soiled area that needs to be cleaned, leave the degreaser on the affected area for a few additional minutes before washing. Take care that the degreaser does not dry out.
If you have an especially light stain, dilute the degreaser with up to five parts water.
If the oil stain has soaked through the surface of your driveway, it may reappear with a day or two of cleaning. If this happens, repeat the cleaning process until the stain is gone permanently.
